THE VISUAL JOURNEY

In 2022, I decided I wanted to spend some time studying visual theory to grow artistically. I realized it was a good opportunity to share what I learned along the way. This is how “The Visual Journey“ was born, a series of articles focusing on specific subject like visual spaces, surface divisions, lines, shapes, colors, etc... Each one of those (available here) was an excuse for me to get deeper into the theories and experiment as much as possible through digital and more traditional mediums like photography.

THE IDEA

The Visual Journey is firstly based on a book of Bruce Block called “The Visual Story“ which divides the theory into 7 visual components: spaces, lines, shapes, tones, colors, movements and rhythm. For each one of those I wanted to make a dedicated article that would start with the theory, confront it to other points of view and use it to study and create visuals.

THE PROCESS

Each article gives me the opportunity to embrace the subject through 4 steps:

1.Theory & References

I gather as much visual references and theories on the subject as I can on the web but also in my personal art book collection. Comparing points of view is crucial to understand the whole picture.

2.Studies

I dissect frames coming from several mediums but mostly films. This step allows me to understand in practice what is recurrent and how certain techniques are used to convey certain emotions.

3.Experimentation

I experiment, iterate and craft visuals based on what I’ve learned.

4.Content

I synthesize my takes on the subject and create content useful for others.

THEORY AND REFERENCES

Getting physical content is crucial for me because it transfers the first step of any project from digital to physical. It makes me explore ideas outside of the box. Over the years, I managed to gather a small collection of art books talking about photography, paintings, specific video games or visual theory.

In the context of “The Visual Journey“, I’m always trying to confront multiple takes on the specific subject of the article I’m writing. I read the books that talk about visual theory and I see what matches, what is divergent and figure out my approach on the subject.

For each new project, I go through my collection and pick the books that seem to match the theme or inspire me. I then take a new notebook dedicated to this project and start exploring ideas. See, I’m not against Pinterest, I even use it sometimes but I know that too much content will only generate noise and scatter your thoughts.

CONTENT

Additionally to the value of the article itself, I try for each blog post to build content that can be re-used for your own journey.

Here’s a list of what you can expect from those:

  • Guides

  • Files

  • Tutorials

  • Tools

  • Unreal Projects

  • And more…
